The WuleSymphony Orchestra Presents a Zen-Inspired Musical Feast During Its Italian Tour

2024-10-13

The Wule Symphony Orchestra (formerly known as: Jinghui Guangxuan Symphony Orchestra) conducted its concert tour across three Italian cities - Milan, Verona, and Rome - from October 13 to October 21, 2024. This cultural endeavor was jointly supported by the Italy-China Cultural Exchange and Development Center, the Italy-China Culture and Tourism Promotion Association, and the Sino-Italian Culture and Art Promotion Association.

As the world's sole symphony orchestra composed entirely of Chan Buddhist monastics, the Wule Symphony Orchestra (formerly: Jinghui Guangxuan Symphony Orchestra) was awarded the Guinness World Record in 2015 for being the "Largest All-Monastic Chan Music Art Ensemble" - marking the first Guinness World Record achievement in Buddhist history. Furthermore, the orchestra holds the distinction of being the first monastic performance group to stage a concert at UNESCO headquarters in the post-establishment era of the People's Republic of China.

During this tour, the band interacts with the audience through dance and sound meditation, such as traditional Buddhist rituals such as displaying Buddhist handprints and walking by Zen masters, chorus performances of Gilkisen's "Requiem" and Mozart's "Ode to the Holy Body", or meditation dance and Zen daily etiquette displays adapted from "Jasmine Flower". Through these performances, tradition and modernity are gracefully blended together to create a peaceful and solemn atmosphere. In the last part of the concert, chorus-formed sound meditation leads the audience into a pure world, allowing the audience to find inner peace and tranquility in the fusion of music and meditation.
